EAL/D Teacher (K – Y12) Trinity Grammar School, Sydney

Kim brings 11 years of experience as an EAL/D teacher to this workshop, along with a recent Master of Education (TESOL) degree with a focus on AI’s potential in the EAL/D classroom. Her capstone research project explored this very topic, and she is passionate about sharing her knowledge and practical strategies with fellow educators.

EAL/D Learning in the AI Age: From Theory to Transformation

As EAL/D student populations continue to grow, educators require effective tools and strategies to cater to their diverse needs. AI offers a unique opportunity to personalize learning experiences, address specific learning gaps and foster a more inclusive learning environment for EAL/D students.

This interactive workshop will explore the pedagogical possibilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a powerful tool to support EAL/D students and teachers in K-12 classrooms.

Participants will engage in:

  • Understanding AI’s Potential: We’ll delve into practical applications of AI that can personalize learning, enhance vocabulary development, and promote differentiated instruction for EAL/D students at various proficiency levels.
  • Hands-on Exploration: Attendees will experience a selection of user-friendly AI-powered learning tools for pronunciation practice, grammar support, and vocabulary acquisition.
  • Integration Strategies: The workshop will equip educators with practical strategies to seamlessly integrate AI tools into their existing lesson plans, maximizing their effectiveness for EAL/D learners.
  • Collaboration and Discussion: Time will be dedicated for open discussion and collaboration, allowing teachers to share their experiences and explore best practices for utilizing AI in their classrooms.

Workshop Outcomes: By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Articulate the potential affordance and challenges of AI for EAL/D learners and educators.
  • Evaluate and explore a range of user-friendly AI-powered learning tools.
  • Develop strategies to integrate AI tools effectively into their lesson plans for K-12 EAL/D students.
  • Connect with other EAL/D educators and share best practices for utilizing AI in the classroom.
